Bird Obsessed

About 4 years ago, I bought these little plaster plaques at Canada Blooms. They hung in the sunroom at our old house.

That was the start of an obsession.  I had to have birds in my decor. And until I started looking around the house, I didn't realize exactly how many pieces with birds I had. Most of them are in the kitchen now and so that's what I'll share.

These little sparrows sit on a shelf in the kitchen bookcase along with a birdhouse that I bought for my husband last year. It was supposed to go outside but never made it. I kind of like it's rustic look and weathered roof alongside my Joy of Cooking (circa 1978).

These two cast iron birds were also to go outside. But they got kind of lost in the garden, so they found a home on the sideboard in the kitchen. If you go back and look at that posting, you'll see the old wallpaper. I kind of forgot how much I hated it compared to our clean white and green of the new look.

My obsession doesn't end with figurines. Noooooo! I also have a number of ceramic pieces that have a bird theme - this square plate, salt and pepper shakers and birds on columns. The subtle highlighting on these pieces will work well with the roman shades that I still have to make. The fabric has that same rusty tone on it.

The thing about a collection is that it's a great way to buy something for someone. It seems that I get a lot of gifts with a bird theme including this really sweet heart/twig/nest that my BFF, Helen, gave me last year. I adore this and now that there's some contrast between the piece and the wall, it looks amazing.

Helen knows that I also like to collect birds nest after I made her husband yank one out of a climbing shrub last year. I love how this little nest even has eggs in it!.

But here's a hint, folks. It's my birthday next month. I'm finished collecting bird objects for now. Can we move onto something else? Roosters perhaps?

It's funny how you can look around and suddenly you realize you have collection - even if it didn't start as one :-)

Oh your birds are so cute! I love them, especially the plaques that started it all.

But you've hit on my great fear about collections. Once word gets out that you "collect" something, that's all anybody buys you and the next thing you know you've decorated your house in (fill in the blank) theme.

I love them!
I used to collect elephants - a long long time ago ( when the earth was green lol )
So, what will be next?

What a good way of getting your message across! You love the ones you have but don't want to be known as the Bird Lady! That happened to me with juicers long ago. I bought a few and then everyone gave me more.

I have to say though that your birds are so pretty and made of such nice materials.

One day I hope to decorate with a theme like that. Right now our decor could best be described as "whatever is on sale at WalMart". Pitiful, I know. But that's one of the reasons I enjoy your blog so much...very inspirational!

Just yesterday, while a friend and I were browsing in a large store , here in Rockport, Texas, I actually picked up and admired these exact plaques.
