For less than $10, you get a kit with an amaryllis bulb, "soil" and a pot to plant it in. Just follow the directions, add water, put it in a sunny spot and watch it turn from this....

This is only after a week or so. New leaves sprouting up from the centre of the bulb quickly turn into a magnificent show of red (or white or pink depending on your choice). I always choose Red Lion because it just screams Christmas to me.

Because these bulbs tend to be a bit top heavy, I always try and support them with some dogwood twigs (or in this case wild rose). The blooms will last about 2-3 weeks.
This is also the time of year to start your forced narcissus (or paperwhites) if you want blooms for the holidays. Personally I like to wait until January and then I just pop them into a glass vase, add some pebbles and water and watch them grow. This way in the depths of winter, there are fresh smelling blooms cheering even the darkest days.
