My New Kitchen Table and an Old Wooden Box

My friend, Bill from Deer Ridge Farms, FINALLY finished my harvest table for the kitchen. I say finally because it was ordered when we first met in November. But between Christmas and their annual trip to Florida to escape our Canadian winters AND me not nudging him hard enough, it was sort of left to the bottom of the pile of his orders. It was worth the wait.

Now before you judge me for my mismatched kitchen, please keep in mind that this is a room in progress. Well actually it's a room in denial. I haven't done a thing. I'm in the hunter/gatherer stage of redoing the kitchen. Found the sideboard at an auction (it's going to be painted out to match the table), the floor needs to be replaced (on the agenda for the fall) and the wallpaper is coming down. The only thing that's working is the new table. And it's probably not staying the same as I'm likely going to paint out the base.

Bill certainly did his magic with this one. The base and legs are from an old table found in an auction house in the northern U.S. (he won't tell me where in fear that I might go there) and the top is made of boards from an old barn floor - pine which he planed and refinished to this high gloss. The chairs are also from Bill - they are from an old church in our area and they were selling them off to him for a song. I grabbed four but need two more.

It's also a great place to show of my latest project - this old wooden box which I've repainted, distressed and transferred a terrific graphic of a vintage bee hive.

Just a quick coat of primer, then an undercoat of a sage green followed by a coat of "decorator white" homemade chalkpaint and this 25 cent garage sale find has become my new centrepiece. I have another one I'm working on which will have "fleurs" stencilled onto it for a more French ephemeral look.  The transfer isn't perfect, but I kind of like it that way - makes it look like it's been there a long time and is wearing off. I still need to wax it and am going to try adding some brown stain to the wax for an antique finish. But I couldn't wait to share it with you.

What a gorgeous table. Well worth the wait. Love your little box too. So creative of you. I judge no one when it comes to kitchens. My kitchen had mauve laminate counter tops for more years than I care to think about. Just takes time to get it all together. (and money:)

You must be thrilled that the table arrived. Sounds like it will open a little can of worms with to-do projects. Can't wait to see your vision come to life. Love your hydrangeas.

The table is lovely - and I rather like a mismatched, or eclectic look in the kitchen! I love the box with the stencil.

The old wooden box definitely looks great on the kitchen table. The design's a bit unclear, though. I suggest you paint a clear design on it, Heather. May I suggest another color? Yellow would definitely add more life to your kitchen table, girl. :)

The main feature is the kitchen. You did a great job.

I have a very similar table, with tall ladder back chairs. Another great idea for your chairs would be to put your current chairs , two on each side and then have two tall back comfy upholstered chairs for the heads of the table....or you could keep the four you have and then have a long bench for one of the long sides of the table, I love both those looks! I can't seem to find where you are exactly but I assume on the east coast? I am in Calgary, currently lots of snow! Best luck on your house!
