Hand Painted Wallpaper

Most of my friends are telling me that it's time to get a job because I must have way too much time on my hands to hand paint a wallpaper design in my guest bathroom. But when I first saw this room designed by Jones Design Company, I knew this is was exactly the look I wanted for the bathroom.

I mean really, how long could it take to do? It's just a small bathroom after all. It's not like I took on this whole room like the one above. Oops, umpteen hours later, a small redesign after finishing one wall and deciding that the pattern was too small (which I had reduced) and company this past weekend and it's still not finished. And to top it all off, I realized that the trim and door frames was actually painted before with oil paint and I painted it with latex - needless to say it needs to be repainted as it didn't adhere. So I'm even further behind.

Here's the project to date - one wall ALMOST completed, but looking spectacular (if I don't say so myself):

pencil lines still showing

Here's how to do it:

Use the template provided by Jones Design or make your own using heavy cardboard (I used an old gift box lid).

Trace the design onto the wall. To get the double line, just stagger each row vertically. I used the level and drew a line across the wall to use as a guide to keep it straight because I'm bad at that. I also used a line to keep it vertically straight as you can see in the picture below.

Do one section at at time or you will go crazy like I did. Paint along the inside of the lines with an acrylic paint - I used the same paint from the trim so that the colours matched (BM Cloud White).

Repeat this process until the whole room is done - repeat, repeat, repeat. It will be so worth it once it's done. Maybe by summer at the rate I'm going.

Had planned on working on it some more today now that the weekend is over, but just got asked to play in a curling bonspiel today (that's like a baseball tournament). At least I'll work off some calories for the food indulgent weekend we just had.

I love it! It's looking so good and I feel ya at the same time. I just posted the ugliness of my homemade stenciling. I wish I had gone your direction and yes, I'm also told to get a job. Don't hate people, Haha. Beautifu! Can't wait to see the finished room.

Hard work with a big reward. This is the kind of project that when complete you can walk into the room for years to come and feel a great sense of accomplishment. Nicely done Heather! ~Jen

I would not have the patience to do this-you are amazing! The pain will definitely be worth the gain though as I can already see it looks amazing!

Best wishes,
