Among the usual debris of old shingles, some insulation, an old mattress (yuck) and some wood was this musty, dusty old schoolbook dating from 1908.
That actually pre-dates the house which was built in 1935. But looking in the front page, we can see that it actually belonged to Frank Eichenberg who originally built the house and lived here until the mid-70s. The Eichenberg family was prominent in the Tillsonburg community as they owned the local Chevrolet dealership for many years.
This book on ancient history was originally printed in 1906 and Frank used it while attending the Tillsonburg High School in 1908.
A piece of history right in our attic. I love old houses.

Fantastic! The first time I poked my head into the attic of our 1935 farmhouse I spotted a little round 'thingy' sticking up out of the insulation. I pulled on the 'thingy' only to discover it was part of an old shotgun! Hubby was so surprised - he'd been up there several times and not seen it. He quickly shut the hatch before I could look any further...
Ha! "fantastic" is exactly the word i said to myself too! What a treasure. Do you have any plans to preserve it or its pages?
@ Green Goose - I'm thinking we may actually give it to the local historical society IF I can pry it out of my husband's hands. Otherwise I think I better look for a way to preserve it properly.
Oh man, that is my dream. I would love to go explore old abandoned houses. I'm sure there is history just waiting to be discovered. That's a great find. How neat!
Thanks for stopping by today.
Have a lovely day.

That is so awesome! My brother in law has a victorian house and when they were finishing the attic they found a newspaper and a pair of mens underwear from the early 1900's! :D
