Thanksgiving Countdown

We're getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving here in Canada this weekend and I'm in full throttle mode as preparations begin for the annual feast. This year we are celebrating with my children and stepchildren, grandsons, some sisters and nieces and nephews - a total of 18.

Today was organizing the silver and china, finallizing the menu and starting the childrens' table crafts. First thing on the list is to set the table. I like to get it done ahead of time so that I can put a plan for together for which serving pieces and cutlery I'll need. Also this gives me time to pull out those items that only get used once a year, like the famous turkey gravy boat and salt/pepper shakers:

It may seem silly to purchase things that only come out one day each year. But at $10 each a decade ago, I've certainly got my money's worth out of them. They are a constant source of amusement for my son and daughter, but they remember them every year and I'm afraid if I don't put them out there will be a mutiny. Same goes for the old turkey bread basket and cranberry dish:

On their own, they look a little tired and worn. But I've had that turkey basket for about 20 years and every year it brings back fond memories of my children's Thanksgivings in Waterdown where we hiked through Tews Falls every Thanksgiving.

All together, these items don't play a huge part of the decor. But add some nostalgia and memories to a holiday that's about those very things.

I'm so excited because I'm getting to use my new plates - an old brown and white transferware pattern called "Country Days", topped with some authentic Depression glass brown plates, a brown napkin  and a white mini pumpkin.

I think it makes for an elegant, yet simple place setting for which to celebrate the Canadian harvest, the good fortune of having loved ones around us and the bounty of a beautiful meal.

Happy Thanksgiving
